What Is Custom Interior Design?
Custom interior design refers to making specific adjustments to your home that align with your personal taste, lifestyle, and functional needs. Whether it's the layout of your rooms, shape of the windows, or color scheme of your walls, custom interiors allow every element to be tailored to reflect your preferences.
Not all homes or apartments are created equal. Rooms vary in size, shape, and distribution—and people vary in their design tastes and lifestyles. Customization addresses this diversity by ensuring that your home is functional, aesthetically aligned, and, most importantly, uniquely yours.
How To Design a Costume Interior?
Let’s break down the process of customization into two distinct levels: space-level customization and human-level customization.
1. Customization on the Space Level
Space-level customization is the more common concept in custom interior design. It involves adjusting the physical elements of a space to make it both functional and visually appealing. Here’s what you need to consider when customizing your space:
- Furniture and Fixtures: Choose furniture that fits perfectly in your room, with the right sizes, styles, and finishes.
- Kitchen Design: Custom cabinets are designed to maximize storage and fit seamlessly into your kitchen layout.
- Rug Size and Color: Select rugs that fit your space perfectly and match the room’s color scheme.
- Wall Finishes: Choose custom paint colors, quality finishes, and wallpaper that align with your vision.
- Fabric Patterns: Even fabrics and wallpapers can be customized to fit your aesthetic needs.
All these elements work together to create a space that not only looks beautiful but also fits your functional needs perfectly.
2. Customization on the Human Level
This is where design becomes more personal—it’s not just about fitting furniture to a room, but fitting a home to a person’s life. At this level, personalization is key.
Let’s say you have a beautifully designed space that meets all the space-level requirements, but it still doesn’t quite feel right. Why? Because customization that doesn’t take the human element into account is incomplete.
During my conversations with clients, I often hear other professionals ask, “What’s your favorite interior design style—modern, neoclassical, Scandinavian?” In my opinion, this approach oversimplifies the design process. Interior design is about understanding the person behind the space.
I believe that every human deserves a unique style based on how they live, their activities, and how they want to feel in their home. That’s why I ask more in-depth questions like:
- How do you plan to use the space?
- What activities do you enjoy at home—reading, watching TV, practicing yoga?
- How do you want to feel in each room of your home?
Asking these kinds of questions gives us a deeper understanding of the client’s needs, allowing us to shape the design concept to fit their lifestyle. In essence, human-level customization focuses on feeling and use—how the space will be used and the emotions it evokes.
Why Custom Interiors Matter
Custom interiors allow homeowners to shape their living space exactly how they envision it. Whether you’re a homeowner looking to make your space more functional or a designer aiming to create spaces that deeply resonate with your clients, understanding the principles of custom design is essential.
With custom interiors, we can achieve a balance between functionality, aesthetics, and personal preference—making homes not just beautiful, but perfectly aligned with how we live.
