3D interior design software has done a lot and continues to have a massive impact on the interior design and architecture industry over the past few decades. With these tools still in constant improvement, we were able to take the quality of our projects to a whole new level. It transformed the process of achieving our projects in a more precise, immersive, and efficient way. Let’s look deeper at how this technology has evolved in interior design and why it is necessary for today’s professionals.

The story started with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) in the 1980s, which was used to create flat technical drawings. This took massive labor from designers’ shoulders, creating layouts, elevations, and structural details. Software like AutoCAD provides more accuracy and speed than hand drawings but still lacks depth or the third dimension, so the designer has to rely on imagination to translate these drawings into real space.

Later, in the 1990s and early 2000s, 3D modeling software like Autodesk’s 3DS Max and Google’s SketchUp changed the game completely. This software allowed designers to create 3D models and generate lifelike renders, making communication with clients easier.

Numerous photorealism and Real-time rendering engines have evolved behind this 3D modeling software. Using programs like Vray and Corona Renderer integrated with 3D Max and SketchUp, you can produce 3D renders with real-time lighting, textures, and materials. This helps designers convince their clients and takes the quality of their projects to a whole new level.

Because technology won’t stop surprising us, parametric and Algorithmic design tools such as Revit from Autodesk and the Grasshopper plugin for Rhino were introduced this time. Thanks to these tools, the designer can rapidly generate many design variations, control their behavior by playing with many parameters, and easily embed technical information such as dimensions and materials within the 3D model.

Example 01: Luxurious master bedroom – Residential Villa – Qatar

This is part of a big villa project I designed in Qatar. As you can see, the bedroom has an open layout containing a bed space, a sitting area, and a walking closet that leads to the bathroom. for this kind of space, there is no better way to present it than a virtual tour.

 

Example 02: Luxurious Formal Reception – Residential Villa – Oman

My client asked for a formal reception in a different style than the rest of the villa. The main difference is that in augmented reality, you can manipulate virtual models such as furniture in an already existing physical space. Augmented reality furniture placement brings a new level of interactivity to design presentations.

We are officially living in the age of artificial intelligence. As for all the other fields, construction will also benefit from this vast potential.
